Precision and performance

A conversation with Gabriele Carniglia, RJ's Capt.

RJ's Capt. Gabriele Carniglia details the technical choices behind a bespoke explorer yacht

MRM: What were the owners' main requests for their new yacht, following their satisfaction with the first RJ?

GC: The owners wanted complete customisation for their new yacht. Key requests included larger, more private spaces for both owners and guests, greater autonomy, and higher cruising speeds combined with low fuel consumption to broaden their range of destinations without sacrificing efficiency.

MRM: What specific storage and provisioning needs did the owners identify?

GC: They asked for extensive storage areas, including large refrigerators and freezers, to support longer voyages. They also required a water purification system to produce potable water on board, reducing reliance on plastic bottles and enhancing sustainability.

MRM: How did the owners plan to manage waste on board?

GC: Advanced waste management solutions were essential. The yacht includes a vacuum waste system and a refrigerated garbage room, ensuring hygiene and practicality during extended trips away from port infrastructure.

MRM: How was comfort and stability addressed in the yacht's design?

GC: From the outset, the owners emphasized top-tier comfort and stability. Larger stabiliser fins with electro-drive technology from CMC Marine were chosen to ensure smooth cruising even in challenging conditions, enhancing the onboard experience for guests.

MRM: What technology was implemented in the wheelhouse for navigation and control?

GC: The wheelhouse features a semi-integrated dashboard combining Furuno and Böning systems, offering intuitive and seamless navigation and vessel monitoring. A thermal camera enhances safety by integrating thermal imaging with radar, ideal for night navigation or low-visibility conditions.

MRM: What design considerations were taken in the engine room for functionality and crew comfort?

GC: The engine room includes a separate control room, allowing safe and quiet system monitoring away from the main machinery. This setup ensures operational efficiency while prioritizing crew comfort and safety.

MRM: What powers the yacht, and how does it align with environmental standards?

GC: The yacht is equipped with two Caterpillar C32 engines, each delivering 900 kW, ensuring powerful and efficient propulsion. Additionally, two 110 kW Caterpillar generators meet high onboard energy demands and are fully TIER 3 compliant, reducing emissions and supporting the owners' environmentally conscious vision.
