A real story happened just before the holiday break. Probably the best way to describe us.

Italian trattoria.
A big horse-shoe shaped table with 20 young loud italians all wearing the same weird t-shirt with I AM CDM written on the back of it (at different levels of wear and tear...).
Food and wine bottles are everywhere. All of the people around the table are laughing and smiling.
They are undoubtly happy and celebrating something.
The waitress laughs, too, when one of them ask her to go with him on holiday as from that day his shipyard will be closed for two weeks.
Suddenly one of the people sitting at the table stands up, asking for silence, with the typical attitude of someone who wants attention before giving a speech.
Incredibly (for an italian group of people at the end of a lunch, at least) all those smiling faces shut up, except of someone making the usual jokes...

Keep it short Vasco, don’t kill us as usual with tons of words, we wanna go on holiday!!!
Ok, Ok Simone, I will make it simple and short. But this doesn’t mean that what I am going to say it is less important, so finish your glass of wine and stop fooling me around!

It takes a while before order is brought back at the table, and as soon as it happens..:

I don’t need tons of words for this. I just want to look at all of your crazy faces and make sure that we all realize what we do and what we have amazingly done in these six years’.

All the 20 people applaude with all their energy, screaming like hell...

I just want to know that you all will go on holiday this afternoon with the exact perception of what you have concurred to build, and I want to make sure that all of you knows that Ennio, Bruno, Gabriele and I are so incredibly proud of all of you’.

Around Vasco - the one standing up and talking - faces become more attentive and focused immediately after they all have finished applauding and screaming once again...

I am sure that, when you were kids, all of you you were dreaming to be the best in the world in what you were going to do. All of us have dreamt about it at least once in our lives’.

Noise comes back again:

I wanted to be the best soccer player in the world’, ‘I wanted to win the America’s Cup’, they all wanted to be the best in something indeed...

Well Andrea, I don’t think so. Follow me: If a team wins the World Championship, isn’t every single player World Champion?
Oh my god... so... well... I can be considered number one in the world too???!!! That’s true…!!! NUMBER ONE!!!

In a few seconds, no one glass or bottle is on the table anymore. Every single glass is filled with wine and every single bottle is emptied in order to prepare for what it seems to be the most noisy and loud toast ever done (even in Italy).

Ennio stops the frenzy activitie and says:
never forget where we started, how we got here, and what pushed us up to this level. We are still the same people, we are always going to be the same humble family which we were when they all were looking at us like the Cinderellas of the industry! This is and will be our strength. I promise that even if we should become the best in the Universe... we will never stop to sit around the same table sharing successes and defeats, happy moments and hard times, like we have always done and like we are doing today’.

What happened after is very difficult to describe. Probably somewhere there is a video shot by Michele, but... I will make sure it will be destroyed.

Mario, we have already interviewed you about this stunning project before its launch. Now that you have seen the boat into the water and in full cruising mode, which are the three main characteristics which impressed you more of the Nauta Air 108?

The three characteristics of the CDM NAUTA AIR 108 which impress me more are ELEGANCE, SPACE and LIFESTYLE.

ELEGANCE: She pleases my eye under any point of view, the exterior design is very nice whether you look at her from a distance or when you go closer, from the bow and from the stern... we're very happy with the result. It's a timeless design, it is a seaworthy blue water yacht on one side, but with an important and well recognizable touch of style, even though she has contents and substance of a long range explorer she has the elegance of a "navetta". Also the interiors are quite welcoming, not over designed, very relaxing and inviting.

SPACE: whenever you are on board, no matter if you are outdoor or inboard, any ambient is very well proportioned, you don't feel to miss any space, in the main saloon or upper deck sky lounge, Owner's or guest cabins, and the galley as well... not to talk about the exterior! On the three decks there are some very nice areas: the main deck has an incredible lounging area with a grand staircase leading to a huge aft beach platform, the upper deck features a nice al fresco dining area but also a nice forward cockpit with a great panoramic all round looking view, and the sundeck is amazing with the large shaded area including bar and dining table, beside the sunbathing and jacuzzi.

LIFESTYLE: the cocktail of the above mentioned "ingredients" resulted in the outcome of an incredible lifestyle quality, that is to say a yacht providing high quality time for family and their friends. The philosophy behind that is the general concept of the CDM NAUTA AIR range: merging into the nature around you, by giving the same importance and priority to the outdoor living as well as the indoor living, and to emphasize the seamless connection between them.

The open transom is definitely the highlight of this project: how did you get to this idea? Is this something related to the owner brief?
This is a key feature of the yacht which is a direct consequence of our general design philosophy on these yachts. We wanted to really emphasize the contact with the sea around, so as to have a lounging area aft, in direct contact with the sea for easier and more pleasant diving and swimming. This is the basic idea behind this grand staircase which takes more than 50% of the yacht's beam in the aft area: an invitation to the sea when you are on board and vice versa. This was much appreciated and enthusiastically welcomed by the Mexican Owners whereas it's quite in central American yachting culture to anchor very close to the beaches, spend a lot of time in the water, getting up and down, and of course profiting of cocktails with feet in the sea and eyes to shore.

We are really impressed by the design of the main staircase of the boat. Are you happy with the final result?
The central staircase is really impressive, it's a feature that catches the attention of any guest on board. The request of the Owner was to decor the yacht with sculptures and objects which would remind the soul of an explorer blue water yacht, a yacht which is also meant for exploration cruises, and so to have references and quotes of the marine wildlife, following the name itself, NARVALO, the Spanish name of the narwhal, the famous long helical horned cetacean. The newel of the staircase is made by a central glass case containing an oversized sculpture reproduction of the narwhal horn, and the Serena stone steps are fixed to the glass casing so that the stairs run around it, which made for a significant challenge also for the structural side of it. Also the forward bulkhead of the staircase trunk, an horizontal staveted Serena stone full height panel from the main to the upper deck is amazing... all the staircase area is really spectacular.

CdM is absolute leader in its market segment. Three Nauta Air are already into the water and one more is under construction as the biggest boat ever build by CdM. Can you tell us more about this project?
The CDM NAUTA AIR 111' is an evolution of the 108', it's above 300 GRT, a beamier hull with similar characteristics and one meter more in length, featuring very much the same contents as the 108', for an Owner who's a real deep lover of the marine wildlife; this is also the inspirational theme for the interiors, featuring some marine and ethnic hints, and for some detail in the exterior design expressly conceived for the marine wildlife observation.

After the Darwin Class Vessels have become the most successful explorer range of yacht ever built you are now presenting your flagship Nauta Air 108 to the yachting community. Is this replacing the Darwin Line?
Absolutely not. The Darwin Class is for Cantiere delle Marche what G-Class is for Mercedes. It is the Quintessence Explorer Yachting both in terms of design and engineering: like the G-Class, the Darwin can be refreshed (we are already at the 3.0 version) but never replaced. The Nauta Air line is a range which fills another niche of the Explorer Market, actually creating something non existing before: a true Explorer Vessel engineering and seakeeping wise, with a more contemporary design, a lay out which appeals a wider audience, and for the first time giving the possibility to passionate yachtsmen to have a true and heavy duty ship with an elegant and stylish line. After years and years where shipyards have convinced yachtmen that a yacht must look like a tug to be a good ship... CdM is now spreading a new message around!

We have noticed that Narvalo has an - unseen at CdM - bulbous bow. Is this a new naval engineering approach or just a specific request of the owner?
The bulbous bow is strictly linked to the hydrodynamics of the hull. There are hulls (like our Darwins’) which do not need a bulbous bow to be efficient and perform well, and there are others (like the Nauta 108) which are studied to have a bulbous bow. As simple as that. It is just a matter of the right combination of element and the target set by the yard/owner to the engineers.

If you should highlight two engineering characteristic of Narvalo to be considered key for an explorer vessel, which would they be?
For sure the seakeeping performances of the yacht. We had a preliminary idea of how good this hull was during our tank test at the Marin facility in the Netherlands, but when we went out at sea with Narvalo we immediately understood that this vessel was more than we expected: something very special indeed! This is another incredibly seaworthy vessel: a real CDM! The noise and vibration levels are also something quite unique in our industry and definitely difficult to find in the 100/120 feet range! A prospect client seatrialling Narvalo with us said ‘I will trick my friends and say that the boat is hybrid and they will believe it for sure!!!’. Noise and vibration comfort are key for those (but not only…) who want to cruise long passages and spend months onboard their vessel.

Narvalo is definitely a milestone for CdM: what do you expect after her worldwide premiere at the Cannes Boat Show?
Narvalo will definitely hit the target for which we started the Nauta Air range: our market share will grow sensibly and with it our possibility to give to a larger number of yachtmen the pleasure of buying yachts which will finally let them expand their cruising grounds instead of narrowing them down because of their limits.

The shipyard you founded less than six years ago is now leading the worldwide market: what is the secret behind such an incredible success?
In our next issue we will publish the results of a very precise market analysis and I have to admit that we are once again very positively surprised by its outcomes. We are definitely the absolute leaders in our segment of the Explorer Yachts market, and expanding the comparative analysis also to FRP Semidisplacement and Displacement yachts, we are just one step far from the three biggest groups in the world. As I said before, I cannot reveil the secret behind that... But I can definitely give you three very important ingredients of the receipe: Passion for what we do, knowledge of our specific segment and total commitment towards our customers. In a few words, we are a shipyard which keeps on putting at the centre of its world the two most important elements: Clients and Yachts. That is what we are focused on and that’s why we keep on saying: we want to become better and better, not bigger and bigger!

In its determination to design and construct lasting explorer vessels which encapsulate the very concept of sailing alongside its history and grandiose feats, Cantiere delle Marche is animated by a real desire to restore strong values and authenticity to the sailing (and yachting) world whilst transcending fleeting fancies and passing passions.
A look at the philosophical roots of Metaphysics will show us that everything stems from mankind's quest to venture beyond the restraints of sense experience in order to attain authenticity and absoluteness, to seek out a boundless and unlimited universe.
In their artwork and poetic vision, both de Chirico and Chagall took a universal approach, presenting the spectator with pictures that subverted traditional concepts about matter and challenged conventional viewpoints.

The Nauta Air and Darwin Class ships have been depicted in all their grandeur out of the water so as to bring to the fore their fine silhouette and essential seafaring functions.
The chosen setting lies on the extreme confines of navigable waters, just outside the Arctic Circle in Greenland. In these inhospitable places, the eye of a Leica M3, the camera used by such photographers as Cartier Bresson to immortalise their travels, captured on film images of hostile areas which are impenetrable to all but a steel vessel, the only way to access their beauty on their own terms.
The visual aim was to place the CdM Explorers on a metaphysical plane suspended between spectacular scenery and sailing theory.

Thus, Cantiere delle Marche redefines the limits of yachting, delivering vessels that free their users to such an extent that the only fetter left is that of their own imagination.

How did you ended up designing and building explorer vessels?
Explorer. This is the main word here. Yachts built to travel and discover the world without the need to rush into a crowded marina for refueling or to fill up the fresh water or fuel tanks. Yachts built to travel and not to see how long it takes to sail from point A to point B (which for fast yachts are usually very closed). Passion for navigation how it was intended many years ago, the marine environment, technology and serious naval architecture to guarantee the maximum performance (again... not in terms of speed) and safety at sea without compromises.

Why Cdm?
Cdm is a shipyard which reflects the spirit which has grown with me along these years. Here we are all on the same wave length, we want the best for our customers and therefore for us. Any improvement, suggestion, idea from the shipowner side is always welcome and carefully analyzed and evaluated. We like the brainstorming approach, we like challenging ideas and comparison. Comparison between different experiences all converging towards a common target…our strong, seakeeping, comfortable, safe and environmental compatible yachts. Every yacht is different from the other, exactly like the people who are buying them. It is fully tailored... on the dreams of the people who want to navigate them.

How do you see the the future of the nautical market?
More safety, comfort and efficiency in terms of performance and environmental respect. Research is the key word. Thousands of hours spent thinking and building, trying all the time to achieve a better result and sharing the dream of the emotions which our boat gives to their owners. I feel we are already on the way!

How do you feel inside your working team?
Our team is composed by poliedric people. The majority of us have a wide range of experiences coming from different fields of the yachting industry. The team is therefore very dynamic and always open to analyse new ideas allowing us a continuous progessional but also personal growth. It is a development which goes on on a daily basis. I feel good!

Next challenge?
Our next challenge is the same as our today and yesterday challenges. We want to do better, to improve our way of "thinking" the product we create, since we all know there is always space for improvements. I hope we will always manage to have the time to think and analyse what we do before we do it because this is what makes the difference between producing and creating. A big difference.
